History RAF Middleton St George became home to 76 and 78 Squadrons, Royal Air Force in January 1941. The following year 419 (Moose), 420 (Snowy Owl) and 428 (Ghost) Squadrons, Royal Canadian Air Force took over the base. Post war the airfield returned to the RAF until it became Teesside International Airport in 1964. The Middleton St George Memorial Association is a community organisation formed in 1977, which aims to keep alive the memory of all those who served at RAF Middleton St George, now Teesside International Airport, and maintain the memorial garden outside the St George Hotel, which was previously the officer's mess. Previously we maintained the Memorial Room, which displayed photos and memorabilia. Opened in October 2016, the room was open to visitors every day, from October 2016 to December 2018 when the hotel closed. We regret that The Memorial Room is currently closed. We will update the website as soon as we have more information. The opening of the Memorial Room Due to Corona Virus restrictions the 2020 and 2021 Memorial Services were held as a private events, wreaths were laid by a member of our committee and invited guests at the Memorial Garden, Teesside International Airport. 13th June 2020 When the Covid19 restrictions were relaxed enough to allow 6 people to meet in a group at an open air venue the Committee realised a simple service was possible at the Memorial. Adhering strictly to these guidelines and at very short notice we are very pleased to let our Veterans and Supporters know that we represented everyone with prayers and the laying of wreaths on Sat 13th June 2020. We apologise to all who would have wished to be there but we had to Stay Safe. With grateful thanks to Rev'd Colin Lingard for leading the service with a few of the committee in attendance.
